Elke joined Madame Mao's Dowry as a photographer and artist. As Shanghai rapidly developed she photographed the lanes as they faced demolition, capturing many of the painted murals of Mao that were largely erased through redevelopment or the extensive repainting exercise that preceded Shanghai Expo. Over the years Elke expanded her designs from cards and notebooks to a wide array of products, all connected to her beloved Shanghai.

Tragically Elke died of cancer in 2016. Thanks to The Shanghai Gift Company initially, and more recently ourselves, and to Elke's forethought her products are still being produced and we (Elke's favourite store) are proud to have a daily reminder of her clever and imaginative talent that remains as a pillar of Shanghai design.
