Beyond the propaganda. A different picture of Mao Era China.

 

Madame Mao’s Dowry holds a substantial collection of original news photographs from the Mao Period, many dating from the 1950s. What makes this collection particularly special is that each photograph has its original printed propaganda text — the words intended to accompany it when it was published.

 

We translate these texts into English, making the material accessible to a wider audience. But while the accompanying words tell us how an image was meant to be understood, it is the photographs themselves that make this collection so compelling.
